The best way to prevent vitamin A deficiency and to improve vitamin A levels is by eating a well-balanced diet and incorporating foods high in vitamin A.
Recommendations based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans include:
- Eating a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products, and oils.
- Eating a variety of protein foods, including seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, legumes (beans and peas), nuts, seeds, and soy products. Beef liver also contains high amounts of vitamin A.
- Limiting foods and beverages higher in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium.
- Limiting alcoholic beverages.
- If dietary changes are not sufficient, or if you have increased needs, a vitamin A supplement may be recommended by your healthcare provider. It’s important to consult with your provider before determining if supplementation is necessary, as too much vitamin A can also have negative health effects.
