Albumin to Creatinine Ratio (ACR) Test

Get a better understanding of your kidney function with this ACR kidney test.

Your kidneys play a significant role in your health by recycling the reusable components in your blood (such as minerals) and by discarding unneeded waste products from your blood through urine. Albumin is a major protein and is one of these unneeded products. When your kidneys are functioning correctly, virtually no albumin should appear in your urine.

This test screens for kidney function problems by calculating your albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR). ACR is calculated by dividing the amount of albumin by the amount of creatinine in the urine. If the ratio shows more albumin in the urine than there should be it may indicate kidney damage.

FAQ

  • If your ACR range is high, it’s important to talk to your provider about possible treatment plans that can improve and protect your kidney function. Taking an ACR kidney test like our Albumin to Creatinine Ratio (ACR) Test can provide a better understanding of your kidney health and help you have more informed conversations with your healthcare provider. Finally, some lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise and a healthy diet that’s low in processed foods and saturated fats may help lower a high ACR.4

  • Our ACR kidney test calculates your ACR by dividing the amount of albumin by the amount of creatinine present in your urine. A high ACR means there is more albumin in the urine than should be, a condition known as albuminuria. Increased albuminuria can be a sign that kidneys are not functioning normally and may be damaged.3  Albuminuria is a risk factor for developing certain conditions, which may include kidney disease and cardiovascular disease.

You should consult with a healthcare provider if you have any questions about your results, or if your results are outside of the standard range. Your provider may want you to repeat this test if your results are elevated.
