The total testosterone test is for women with high testosterone symptoms

This Total Testosterone Test measures the amount of testosterone in your blood with high accuracy and sensitivity. This test is ideal for women experiencing symptoms and conditions related to high testosterone levels (hyperandrogenism), such as irregular hair growth, acne, irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, pituitary conditions and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

This test’s high sensitivity also makes it useful for men with low testosterone. Knowing your testosterone levels can provide valuable insights into your overall health.

Note: This test does not diagnose or determine the cause of infertility, menstrual irregularities or any health condition. Some medications can affect your testosterone levels. Hormone treatments that contain estrogen may raise testosterone levels. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare provider if you have any questions about your result.

What's Tested
  • Total Testosterone

Testosterone is a hormone produced primarily in the ovaries and testicles. It plays a crucial role in muscle mass, bone density, libido and overall well-being. This test measures total testosterone levels in the blood using the liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) method. Testosterone levels naturally decline with age. High levels can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, irregular hair growth and acne. Abnormal levels may indicate underlying health conditions such as PCOS and other reproductive conditions.

FAQ

  • This test is ideal for women experiencing symptoms related to high testosterone levels, such as irregular hair growth, acne, mood regulation, irregular menstrual cycles, or infertility. This test is also helpful for men with hypogonadism, a condition characterized by low testosterone production, who are assessing their low testosterone levels.

Consider our Total Testosterone Test to screen your total testosterone levels. Or if you want a deeper understanding of your testosterone levels, including total and free testosterone, consider our Comprehensive Testosterone Test.

  • Results will show your total testosterone levels, which can be compared to normal ranges for your age and sex. Abnormal levels may indicate hormonal imbalances or other health conditions.

This total testosterone blood test uses liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) technology to provide significantly higher accuracy and sensitivity than traditional immunoassay methods. This is particularly useful when measuring the lower testosterone levels often observed in women and hypogonadal men (men with low testosterone).

Talk to your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns about the results of your total testosterone test.

  • Normal testosterone levels in women vary throughout the day, from person to person, and throughout life. Our highly sensitive total testosterone test provides accurate measurements, even at the lower levels found in women.

Consult with your healthcare provider if you have questions or concerns about the results of your testosterone levels blood test.

  • Yes, the LC/MS-MS method is highly sensitive and can accurately measure high testosterone levels in women, helping to identify potential hormonal imbalances with your provider.

  • The LC/MS-MS method used in this total testosterone blood test offers superior accuracy and sensitivity compared to traditional immunoassay methods, especially for measuring the lower levels typically found in women and hypogonadal men.

  • While testosterone is often associated with male characteristics, it plays an essential role in women's health as well. Here's why testosterone levels are significant for women:

    • Reproductive health: Testosterone contributes to ovarian function and libido in women
    • Muscle and bone strength: It helps maintain muscle mass and bone density
    • Energy levels: Proper testosterone levels can influence overall energy and vitality
    • Mood regulation: Testosterone may affect mood and cognitive function
    • Metabolic health: Testosterone can influence weight

Abnormal testosterone levels, whether too high or too low, can lead to various health issues. High levels may be associated with conditions like PCOS, while low levels might contribute to fatigue, decreased libido, or mood changes. Testing may help identify imbalances, allowing for timely intervention and management of related health concerns with your healthcare provider.
